SG 50 S1 Cluster Heritage Training Programme

In line with Singapore’s 50th Anniversary celebrations, primary and secondary schools from the S1 Cluster came together to create four student-led heritage trails. The trails aim to uncover the fascinating history of the districts in which the schools are located.

 The schools involved were:

Schools in the S1 Cluster

Primary Schools Secondary Schools
Ang Mo Kio Pri Ang Mo Kio Sec
CHIJ-Our Lady of Good Counsel Chong Boon Sec
Da Qiao Pri Holy Innocents’ High
Holy Innocents’ Pri Mayflower Sec
Jing Shan Pri Serangoon Garden Sec
Punggol Pri Yuying Sec
Xinghua Pri

Students were provided with background history of the Hougang-Kovan, Serangoon Gardens and Ang Mo Kio. These were the places where the trails were located. SHC was appointed by the Cluster to train specially-selected students from the schools to become docents for the trails. Training began in early March and continued until mid-April.

SHC also conducted a tour-guiding workshop headed by our Director, Ms Savita Kashyap.

Site training for each of the four trails saw our trainerss impart the trail commentaries, tour-guiding skills and other pointers to the student docents on the ground. Finally, the docents were evaluated on their tour guiding by the trainers.

Although the programe wrapped up on 14th April 2015, we are sure the students would have gained valuable insights into and an appreciation for tour guiding, and also experience on public speaking.
