ANZAC Day 2024

Wreaths laid at the Singapore Memorial at Kranji War Cemetery for ANZAC Day, 25 April 2024.

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The soldiers in those forces. On 25 April 1915, Australian and New Zealand forces soldiers formed part of the expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli peninsula in order to open the Dardanelles to the Allied navies.

The significant date is commemorated in both Australia and New Zealand as the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. Commemorative services are held at war memorials at dawn – the time of the original landing in Gallipoli. The significance of the event has been broadened to become a memorial day honouring all Australian and New Zealand soldiers who served and died in World Wars I and II and in the Korean and Vietnam wars.

A public ANZAC Day Dawn Service commemorating the 109th Anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli was held at the Kranji War Cemetery this morning. The event was hosted by the New Zealand High Commission and the Australian High Commission.

Mr Jeya Ayadurai MBE, Director of Singapore History Consultants, laid a wreath in remembrance of the sacrifice made by Australian and New Zealand Forces in the defence and security of Singapore. SHC guides also provided complimentary guided tours of Kranji War Cemetery.
